The core work of Shadows of Shoah is photographing and interviewing Holocaust survivors and publishing stories online and via our travelling exhibitions. We began our work at Kibbutz Gan Shmuel in 2008 and since that time have captured seventy survivor stories in Australia, New Zealand, USA, and on three additional occasions, in Israel.
In 2013 the Prime Minister of New Zealand launched our Shadows of Shoah Exhibition. Since then our exhibition has toured galleries, museums, schools, and public spaces, communicating the reality of the Holocaust to a generation that often knows nothing of this pivotal event.
Our presentation of the Holocaust is unique. Shadows of Shoah stories are compositions of portraits, music and text. From interviews typically sixty to ninety minutes duration, a mere fifteen to twenty-three lines of text are distilled. These are combined with black and white portraits and music to create three minute excerpts or “vignettes”. The various elements are carefully choreographed to achieve the desired artistic result.
Feedback confirms that our stories have been highly successful in engaging those who have little knowledge of the Holocaust, including the young. We are committed to standing against rising antisemitism, Holocaust denial, distortion and universalisation. Our work has proven to be very effective in touching the hearts and minds of non-Jewish folk throughout our country. Our stories have been viewed by many thousands via our travelling exhibitions and we've reached thousands more via our website and Facebook page.
Shadows of Shoah’s goal is to collect as many Holocaust survivor stories as possible, while there is still an opportunity to do so - and to tour our exhibitions widely. Our work is overseen by the board of our Not-For-Profit.
In 2018 we visited Rosh HaNikrah and captured the stories of six survivors: Ayala Shaqed, Shimon Yaakobi, Jenny Kaufman, Aviva Osri, Rina Tirosh and Yehuda Shmueli. The first of those to be completed and published is that of Yehuda Shmueli z"l. The greatest obstacles to the processing and completion of survivor stories are time and resources. התחלנו את עבודתם בקיבוץ גן שמואל בשנת 2008 ומאז תעדנו יותר משישים סיפורי ניצולים באוסטרליה, ניו זילנד ובשתי הזדמנויות נוספות בישראל.
בשנת 2013 השיק ראש ממשלת ניו זילנד את תערוכת "Shadows of Shoah". מאז התערוכה שלנו הציגה בגלריות, מוזיאונים, בתי ספר, ומרחבים ציבוריים, מביאה את המציאות של השואה לדור אשר לעתים קרובות לא יודע דבר על אירוע מרכזי זה בהיסטוריה האנושית.
הצגת השואה שלנו היא ייחודית. "Shadows of Shoah" מציג קומפוזיציות של דיוקנאות, מוסיקה וטקסט. ראיונות הנמשכים בדרך כלל שישים עד תשעים דקות, מזוקקים ל15-20 שורות של טקסט. אלה משולבים עם דיוקנאות בשחור ולבן ומוסיקה לכדי קטעים של שלוש דקות. האלמנטים השונים מתחברים בכוריאוגרפיה זהירה כדי להשיג את התוצאה האמנותית הרצויה.
המשוב מאשש שהאופן בו אנו מנגישים את העדויות לקהל, מצליח לגעת ולחבר אנשים שאין להם ידע רב על השואה, כולל הדור הצעיר.
אנו מחויבים לעמוד נגד האנטישמיות הגואה, הכחשת השואה ועיוותיה. העבודה שלנו הוכיחה את יעילותה ויכולתה לגעת בלב ובמוח של אנשים לא יהודים ברחבי העולם. הסיפורים שלנו נראו על ידי אלפים רבים באמצעות התערוכה הניידת. אלפים נוספים נחשפו באמצעות אתר האינטרנט שלנו ודף הפייסבוק.
מטרת "Shadows of Shoah" היא לאסוף כמה שיותר עדויות של ניצולי שואה, כל עוד קיימת ההזדמנות לעשות זאת – ולהציג את התערוכה הניידת שלנו באופן נרחב. העבודה שלנו מפוקחת ע"י וועד המנהלים שלנו ואנו פועלים ללא מטרות רווח.
בשנת 2018 ביקרנו בראש הנקרה ותיעדנו את סיפורם של שישה ניצולים. הראשון מבין אלה שהושלמו ופורסמו הוא של יהודה שמואלי ז"ל. המכשולים הגדולים ביותר לעיבוד והכנת סרטוני סיפורי הניצולים הם זמן ומשאבים. אנו זקוקים לתמיכתכם על מנת להצליח להשלים את העדויות שנאספו וכל תרומה תקדם אותנו אל היעד.
Shadows of Shoah Trust recently changed its name to Holocaust and Antisemitism Foundation, Aotearoa New Zealand.
